After years in academia that include the study of physics at the Technical Institute of Dresdner to the Academy of Sciences, Edlef joined the Zentrum für wissenschaftlichen Gerätebau (Centre of Scientific Equipment Design) in 1976. Through a combination of highly practical work and close partnerships with companies such as Carl Zeiss, Edlef developed an an excellent sense of how to find innovative solutions via technology. 

While at the Centre, Edlef met Jan Popien und Thomas Lindemann, and quickly decided to apply his technical as well as entrapreneurial skills by co-founding A·P·E in 1992.
